Negative taken for May 11, 1962, Arkansas Gazette article "Navy Plays Host Aboard Aircraft Carrier in Gulf," B1:2. Ernie Deane and twenty others from Arkansas were the guests of the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Antietam. The group was flown in a Navy passenger plane from Arkansas to the Naval Air Station at Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas. They were then flown to the Antietam aboard Navy helicopters. The aircraft carrier was built near the end of World War II and saw significant action in the Korean War. It is now used to train pilots for carrier landings, using both propeller and jet airplanes. The Antietam was the first carrier to have its flight deck rebuilt at an angle for safer and more efficient landings and takeoffs.
